The Mitsubishi Colt 600  was the first Mitsubishi model to bear the Colt name. It was a derivative of the Mitsubishi 500 Super de Luxe, which won the class A victory in the 1962 Macau Grand Prix and much admiration for its performance.

Approximately 10,000 Colt 600's were produced until May 1964 and the model is recognized as a driving force behind the engine of the company's growth.

In 1965 Mitsubishi introduced the Colt 800. This fastback had a water-cooled 843cc 3 cylinder 2-stroke which produced 45 hp. This version was later evolved to Colt 1000F, Colt 1100 F and Colt 11F.

In 1977, Mitsubishi introduced the Mirage. A very modern car in the small middle class. In Europe this Mirage was delivered from 1978 and this car was called“Mitsubishi Colt” because the name Mirage was already used as a fighter in various defences in Europe. These cars were delivered in Europe as 1200, 1400 and a 1400 Turbo version, all petrol engines.

The Colt had front wheel drive, an enormous amount of window area and for that time a modern design. unique in the 1400 series was the "Double Gear Pook". This Super Shift-transmissie, had a secondary gear level that enabled the driver to switch between Power and Economy to give high performance and low fuel consumption.

The car was delivered as three and five doors and in 1982 Mitsubishi introduced the sedan version of this car, the Lancer F (fiore). unique at the time is that Mitsubishi introduced the Modulated Displacement (MD) engine that switched from 4- to 2-cylinder control at low engine loads. This engine had consumption of 1 litre per 20 km.

The Colt of the second generation was launched in October 1983. For the first time the platform was shared with the Mitsubishi Lancer. The Lancer de Colt with the ass was popularly called. This model range was sold successfully, especially in Europe. Also here the Modulated Displacement (MD) engine was used. Technically advanced gadgets such as a Climate control system, LED instruments and power steering were available at the Mitsubishi Colt.

The third generation Colt was perhaps the best Mitsubishi Colt ever made. In this model Mitsubishi started to “galvanise” the bodywork by immersing it in a bath of molten zinc (hot-dip galvanising) and issues such as safety and choice of material were taken very seriously. These cars were so good that the Dealers got empty spaces in their workshop.

This model did not get a turbo version in Europe but a 1600 DOHC 4g63 engine. Later this was enlarged to 1800 cc (DOHC) possibly combined with an advanced fulltime 4wd system. Here the Colt was also ahead of its competitors. This system was later used in the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

Also here the Mitsubishi Colt shared its bottom plate with the Mitsubishi Lancer.

The Colt model was completely changed in 1991 with the introduction of the fourth generation. Developed into a "Basic Car for the New Age" theme, and had the new Mitsubishi Colt  with its own all-in new bodywork, engine and chassis, where the car was lighter, stronger and more modern was made again a very good car developed.

Unfortunately the 1600cc V6 engine was not introduced in Europe, but was a very modern compact 6 cylinder engine. These vehicles have been imported into Europe on a large scale.

The Multi Link suspension gave this Colt a very good handling, similar to sports cars of that time.

In 1995, after a complete model change, the fifth generation Mitsubishi Colt  was launched as "next-generation base car. This time the Colt does not share the same base plate as the Mitsubishi Lancer the base plate of the Colt was shortened by 80 cm to make it more compact.

The 5th generation Colt increased occupant safety with improved active and passive safety specifications, including all-round crashworthiness, SRS-airbags for driver and front passenger, ABS on 4 wheels, and e.g. safety-stop side windows. The fifth generation of Colt went out of production in 2000 and it would take until 2003 before a completely new Mitsubishi Colt was introduced.

n 2002 a new Colt (6th Generation) was released by Mitsubishi in Japan with a design by Olivier Boulay and built on the same platform as the European Smart Forfour.  A European version of the Colt was made at Mitsubishi's NedCar-Factory in Born, the Netherlands. Production started here at the end of 2003.

In 2004, the Colt was launched in Europe, with models ranging from 1.1 MPI Mivec, 1.3 MPI Mivec, 1.5 MPI Mivec and 1.5 Turbo Mivec in petrol. In 2005, a three-door was only for Europe.

The Smart Forfour shared the same base plate, with Brabus presenting a performance version of the Forfour in 2004 with the same engine as the one used in the 2004 European CZ-T, but getting 30 hp (22 kW) extra from the same 4G15 from Mitsubishi.

In November 2004 a 1.5 L D-ID turbo diesel version with direct injection with turbocharger and intercooler with a power of 95 hp (70 kW) was released. Also an option of the automatic manual Allshift gearbox with electric clutch and six gears was possible.

In 2008 a facelift version of the Mitsubishi Colt was released. According to many, the designers of this new Mitsubishi were all fired because the car hadn't become more beautiful.

Mitsubishi Colt CZC

Mitsubishi released its new Colt CZC coupé convertible at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005. The car was a 2 + 2 with electric hardtop and available with the turbo engine of the European CZ-T or as only a 1.5 MPI. DE CZC was developed jointly by Mitsubishi and Pininfarina under the supervision of Ken Okuyama,

De Colt CZC was partly made in the Netherlands, the final assembly took place at Pininfarina in Turin, Italy.

In 2013, sales and production of the Mitsubishi Colt in Europe stopped. In the meantime, the successor to the Colt had already been signed in Japan. It was decided that the name Colt would no longer be used in Europe. The current Mirage model is now sold in the Netherlands as Space Star. A comparison with the old model Space Star is not really valid, and one can actually see the current

Space Star as the 7th generation Mitsubishi Colt.
