Mitsubisi Galant 1998

The name Mitsubishi Galant is derived from the French words Gallan and Valiant, which means something knightly. The Galant was first a compact car and has evolved from generation to generation into a middle class. From 1993 this model was also manufactured outside Japan by Diamond-Star Motors, a former joint venture with Chrysler.

Galant I
The first generation Galant,  then still called Colt Galant, was introduced at the end of 1969. The design was called "Dynawedge" by Mitsubishi, referring to the influence of aerodynamics on the silhouette... Initially only a four-door sedan was available, but from 1970 a two-door hard top was added.

In 1973 the Galant was redrawn. This second generation was exported more widely and re-entered the American market under the Dodge emblem. In Europe the model was sold as the Mitsubishi Colt Galant.

In 1976 a new Galant came out, called Galant Sigma. In many export markets, the name simply became Galant. This time next to the sedan also a  stationwagen was available.

980 brought the fourth Galant. This one had two new engines. One of these engines was the Astron 230; de eerste turbodiesel in een Japanse passagiersauto. Deze Galant 2.3 TD was een van de best verkochte Diesels in die tijd.

The fifth Galant was launched in 1983 and introduced, among other things, front-wheel drive. This improved road holding, there was more interior space and lower fuel consumption. This Galant also had a for the 1980's unusual style which for example also had the Renault 21.

The sixth Mitsubishi Galant then appeared in 1987. The lines of this new model had become rounder. The first year this Galant was already "Car of the year" in Japan. In Europe the five-door hatchback variant of the Galant appeared under the name Eterna. In the Netherlands this was called Hatchback.

The seventh Galant followed in 1992 with improved aerodynamics and four-wheel drive improvements that made the car perform better and quieter. The Galant was also fitted with an advanced multilink suspension, which improved road holding.

Galant VIII

In 1996 the eighth generation of the Galant was introduced with an estate car and without the Hatchback. This Galant remained on the European market until 2006. Due to the high fuel consumption and the performance of the engine, it stayed far behind the competition and the sales of this Galant in the business market reached a low point. The Dutch importer therefore decided in 2006 to remove the Galant from the delivery programme.

In 2004 the ninth generation of Galant appeared. This one exists only as a sedan and became bigger and heavier. This generation is the first to no longer be delivered within the Netherlands.
