The Mitsubishi Carisma was a model of Mitsubishi Motors Europe. The Carisma was introduced at the Dutch AutoRAI in 1995 and was manufactured at NedCar in Born. The Carisma was built on the same platform as the Volvo S40 / V40, because Mitsubishi and Volvo owned NedCar together.

After the introduction of the specially developed Carisma for Europe in 1995, the range was extended in 1996 with a sedan and in 1999 the whole range was thoroughly renewed. From the start the Carisma was available with 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol engines with 90 and 115 hp respectively. In 1997 the range was extended with a 1.9 TD diesel engine from Renault,

the 1.6 10 hp became more powerful and the 1.8 was replaced by the 1.8 direct-injection GDI, which was 10% stronger and 20% more economical than its predecessor. In some countries the Carisma was also available with a 1.3 litre petrol engine from the facelift, but this was not delivered in the Benelux.

 

In 2001, the Carisma was subjected to the Euro NCAP crash tests. Here the model got 3 stars and 24 points.

The Carisma did not get a direct successor after the production was finished in 2004, the eighth generation Mitsubishi Lancer took the place of this model from 2003. Unlike the Carisma, the Lancer was produced in Japan and was not available with diesel engines.
