Mitsubishi Sigma (Sedan)

The Sigma was the top model of Mitsubishi Motors from the upper middle class (E-segment) in the 1990s. At the Paris Motor Show in 1990, the European public got to know Sigma for the first time. This model is considered to be the most advanced and luxurious limosine Mitsubishi has ever sold in Western Europe.

Mitsubishi builds cars for markets all over the world. In the 1970's and 1980's several models were delivered which also carry the Sigma symbol (Σ) in their type designation but do not correspond to the Sigma Limousine model that was delivered in Europe from 1991 to 1996. Examples of these Sigma's are the

Galant Σ between 1976 and 1984 (here Galant), the Galant Σ (USA, here Sapporo) from 1988 to 1990 and the Chrysler / Mitsubishi Sigma in Australia.

The Sigma was closely related to the Mitsubishi Diamante. The Diamante is made for Japan, Asia and North America. The Diamante was different from the Sigma Sedan because it was a hardtop Coupe instead of a sedan. The roof was shorter, the doors had a different construction and the small third windows in the back were missing. The Sigma was a little longer and higher, so it offered more space to passengers in the back.

Sigma Sedan, built in Okazaki, Japan, was launched on the market in 1991. Mitsubishi had decided to face the competition with a very high-tech car. To this end, the car was equipped with TCL, among other things. The TCL system consists of slip control and trace control. Slip control prevents the driven front wheels from spinning, while trace-control ensures that the Sigma keeps its line when cornering, regardless of the condition of the road surface or how much throttle is being applied. Optional were all-wheel steering (4WS) and adjustable, active suspension (ECS). The Sigma in the Netherlands initially came exclusively with a 151 kW (205 HP) delivering 3.0 V6 24 valves DOHC engine. The engine was also used in the Mitsubishi 3000GT, although in the Netherlands this sports model always came with two turbos. Mitsubishi's MVIC variable inlet control unit ensured that the Sigma's torque flow was optimised over a wide range of rpm. In the version with automatic gearbox, ELC-M controls the interaction between gearbox and motor with the aim of making the switching transitions as unobtrusive as possible. A new multi-link rear suspension was designed for the Sigma.

The Sigma was exclusively delivered in the Netherlands with a 3.0 V6 DOHC engine with 24 valves and 151 kW (205 HP). Later the Sigma sedan also received a smaller engine (3000 V6, 170 hp), but a version with this engine was never officially sold in the Netherlands by the Dutch importer. This engine was delivered in the less equipped  Sigma Wagon.
